Betting Terms - Types of Bets

Welcome to Racings bet2win. The excitement of backing a winner can be a thrilling experience. It is easy and you can bet in amounts as small as 50 cents. The following betting terms are explained here:

WIN PLACE

The Win/Place is the simplest and most popular bet type. You select a runner or runners to win and/or be placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

A Win bet is available on every race, and a Place bet is available subject to the number of starters in a race:

  • Where there are 8 or more starters (or at least 7 if the field has been reduced by a Late Scratching) then 3 place dividends are paid.
  • If there are 5, 6, or 7 starters (or 4 starters if the field has been reduced by a Late Scratching), then there will be No Third Dividend (NTD).
  • If there are 4 or less starters in a race, then there is No Place Pool (NPP) and any Place investments will be refunded.

The minimum bet for Win or Place is $A1. A Win and Place bet on a runner is also known as an 'each way' bet

What if one of your runners is scratched?

If your selection is declared a non-runner or is scratched after you have placed your bet your money will be refunded on that selection.

QUINELLA

Quinellas are available on every race.  The minimum unit of investment is 50 cents but the minimum total bet cost is $1.00. However, the dividends are calculated and declared on a $A1 basis.

STANDARD QUINELLA

For a Standard Quinella, just choose the first two placegetters past the post, in any order. As long as your two selections finish first and second, you collect the Quinella dividend.

BOX QUINELLA

With a Box Quinella you can choose as many runners as you like, providing two of your selections finish first and second, in any order. The more runners you 'Box' in a Quinella the more combinations you get. For example, if you 'Box' four (4) runners, say numbers 1,2,3 and 4, you get six (6) combinations: 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 2-3, 2-4 and 3-4. Four (4) runners 'Boxed' in a Quinella will cost $A6 for a $A1 bet and $A3 for a 50 cent bet.

BANKER QUINELLA

If you feel there's a 'sure thing' in a race that looks certain to win or at worst run second, then a Banker Quinella is a perfect type of bet. Your 'Banker' would be the 'sure thing' and you can group it with any number of other runners in that race. Providing your 'Banker' runs first or second and any one of your other selections finishes first or second with your 'Banker', you win the Quinella. The more 'other' selections you take the more combinations you get. For example, if you took a 'Banker' with six (6) other runners you would get six (6) combinations. This bet would cost $A6 for a $A1 bet and $A3 for a 50c bet.

MULTIPLE QUINELLA

A Multiple Quinella allows you take as many runners as you like for each placing. For example, you can take three (3) runners for first or second, and five (5) runners to fill the other placing. Provided that one of your runners selected in the first leg places either first or second, and one of your runners selected for the second leg fills the other placing (second or first), then you win the Quinella.

EXACTA

The object of an Exacta is to select the runners placed first and second in correct order.  As long you select the two runners that finish first and second in correct order, you will collect the Exacta dividend.

Exactas are available on every race. The minimum unit of investment is 50 cents but the minimum total bet cost is $1.00. However, the dividends are calculated and declared on a $A1 basis.

BOX EXACTA

With a Box Exacta you can choose as many runners as you like, providing two of your selections finish first and second you win the Exacta. The more runners you 'Box' in an exacta the more combinations you get. For example, if you 'Box' four (4) runners, say numbers 1,2,3 and 4, you get twelve (12) combinations:1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 2-1, 2-3, 2-4, 3-1, 3-2, 3-4, 4-1, 4-2, and 4-3. Four (4) runners 'Boxed' in a exacta will cost $A12 for a $A1 bet and $A6 for a 50 cent bet.

BANKER EXACTA

Your 'Banker' would be the 'sure thing' and you can group it with any number of other runners in that race. Providing your 'Banker' runs first and any one of your other selections finishes second with your 'Banker', you win the Exacta. The more 'other' selections you take the more combinations you get. For example, if you took a 'Banker' with six (6) other runners you would get six (6) combinations. This bet would cost $A6 for a $A1 bet and $A3 for a 50c bet.

MULTIPLE EXACTA

A Multiple Exacta allows you take as many runners as you like for each placing. For example, you can take four (4) runners for first and three (3) runners for second. Providing one of your runners selected for first runs first, one of your runners selected for second runs second, then you win the Exacta.

What if one of your runners is scratched?

If one of your runners is declared a 'non-runner' or is scratched after you have placed your bet, your money will be refunded on every combination which includes the scratched runner.

 

TRIFECTA

A Trifecta bet is available on every race at every meeting provided there are at least four (4) or more runners. The minimum bet value is 50 cents but you must bet at least $A1 on any single bet. There are several different ways to take a Trifecta.

STANDARD TRIFECTA

For a standard Trifecta you have to select 1st, 2nd and 3rd official placegetters in the correct finishing order. This gives you just one combination to win.

BOX TRIFECTA

A Box Trifecta increases your chance to win a Trifecta. By 'boxing' your selections you cover all the possible combinations involving those runners. For example, three (3) runners boxed will cover all six (6) possible combinations. You can box as many runners as you like. The more runners you box the more combinations you get. The more runners you box the more it will cost

MULTIPLE TRIFECTA

A Multiple Trifecta allows you take as many runners as you like for each placing. For example, you can take three (3) runners for first, five (5) runners for second and twelve (12) runners for third. Providing one of your runners selected for first runs first, one of your runners selected for second runs second and one of your runners selected for third runs third then you win the Trifecta.

BANKER TRIFECTA

If you feel there is a 'sure thing' to win a race, then a Banker Trifecta might be for you. You could make your 'sure thing' a Banker and couple it with two (2) or more runners to finish second and third. Your Banker has to win the race. The more runners you couple with your Banker the more it costs.

ROVING BANKER TRIFECTA

If you have a 'sure placegetter', you can take it as a Roving Banker Trifecta with two or more other runners. Providing your Roving Banker selection runs a place and your 'other' selections fill the other placing’s then you win the Trifecta. Likewise, if you have two (2) 'sure placegetters', you can take those two as a Double Roving Trifecta with one or more other runners. Providing your two (2) Double Roving selections run two of the placing’s, you win the Trifecta.

FIRST4

The First4 is available on selected races and operates on a limited basis. First4 races are marked with a.

The minimum bet is $1, however you can bet in multiples of 25 cents. However the dividend is calculated and declared on a $A1 basis.

Keep a look out for First4 jackpots. If there are no winning units on a First4, the pool jackpots to another meeting at a future date. This jackpot pool is always carried over to a meeting of the same code of racing and will be allocated within 10 days after the first pool jackpots. There are several ways to take a First4.

STANDARD FIRST4

You choose the first four (4) placegetters past the post in the correct order. If your four selections finish in the correct order you have nominated then you win the dividend.

BOX FIRST4

With a box First4 you can select as many runners as you like. The more runners you include, the more combinations you receive and the more it will cost. Providing that four of your selections finish first, second, third and fourth you win the dividend.

BANKER FIRST4

If you think there's a 'sure thing' to win the First4 race, then a Banker First4 is ideal for you. The 'Banker' would be the 'sure thing' and you could couple it with three (3) or more other runners to fill the second, third and fourth placing. Your 'Banker' must win the race and your other selections must finish second, third and fourth for you to win the dividend.

MULTIPLE FIRST4

With a Multiple First4, any number of selections can be taken for first, second, third and fourth. Providing the selections that you nominate for each placing actually finish in that placing, then you will win the dividend. For example, you might select two (2) runners for first, four (4) runners to fill second placing, six (6) runners to fill third and eight (8) runners to finish fourth. The cost of a Multiple First4 is easy to calculate providing your selections for first are also included amongst your selections for second, and your second selections are included amongst your third selections, and likewise your third selections are included in your selections for fourth. In this example you may have selected numbers 1,2 for first, 1,2,3,4 for second 1,2,3,4,5,6, for third and 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 for fourth.

DOUBLES

To win a Double, you must select the winner of each of two nominated races. There are two different types, a standard Double and an Extra Double. Refer to the race meetings in Today's Racing information to find on which races the Doubles will operate.

The minimum bet is 50 cents, however dividends are calculated and declared on a $1 basis.

You can take as many runners as you like in each race or 'leg' of a Double.

To calculate the cost of your Double you simply multiply the number of selections in the first race or 'leg' by the number of selections in the second race or 'leg' by the amount of your bet. For example, if you select three (3) runners to win in the first leg with five (5) runners to win in the second leg for a $1 bet, the cost is 3 x 5 x $1 - $15. If you had the same bet for 50 cents the cost would be $7.50. Providing one of your selections in the first leg wins that race and one of your selections in the second leg wins that race, you win the dividend.

TREBLES

To win a Treble, you have to select the winners of three nominated races Check Today's Racing information to find out on which meetings the Treble will operate. The minimum bet is 50 cents. However, dividends are calculated and declared on a $1 basis.

You can take as many runners as you like in each race or 'leg' of the Treble. The more runners you select to win each 'leg' the more combinations you get. To calculate the cost of your Treble you simple multiply the number of runners you have chosen for the first 'leg' by the number of runners chosen for the second 'leg' by the number of runners chosen for the third 'leg'. For example, if you select four (4) runners to win the first leg, three (3) runners to win the second leg and five (5) runners to win the third leg for a $A1 bet, the cost is: 4 x 3 x 5 x $1 = $60. If you had the same Treble for 50 cents the cost would be $30. Providing one of your selections nominated in each leg wins their particular race, you win the Treble dividend.

ALL-UPS

This bet type is similar to Doubles and Trebles, however gives the flexibility for you to select your own races and whether the runner will Win or run a Place. Up to four races can be selected from the one meeting, enter the race numbers, the selections and whether the runner is to Win or Place your Win/Place bet on the first race, and your winnings from that race become your bet on the second race, and so on for each of the selections. Naturally if your selections do not create a dividend for you, your All-Up bet will stop.

QUADRELLAS

A Quadrella requires you to pick four winners from four races nominated by TAB at the one meeting. A Quadrella differs from an All-Up in that the dividend is determined by dividing the amount of money in the dividend pool amongst successful investors, as opposed to an All Up that transfers your winnings from one race to the next.

The minimum investment for a Quadrella is 50 cents, however all dividends will be displayed for $1. Flexi and Mystery Quadrella betting also available.

Quadrella legs will be added to the 'Race Info' column on Today's and Tomorrow's Racing Schedules. Within a specific meeting, Quadrella legs will be marked as QL1, QL2, QL3 or QL4.   

To calculate the amount you need to spend to receive 100% of the dividend, simply multiply the number of selections in each leg together.   For example, should you wish to have 2 selections in each leg of your Quadrella and receive 100% of the dividend, you will need to spend $16 (i.e. 2 x 2 x 2 x2).
